2010-05-12 - APPOINTMENT OF THE NRCS CEO

Ladies and Gentleman

Good morning

I am here this morning, on behalf of the NRCS Board, to announce the official appointment of Mr Moses Moeletsi as our new Chief Executive Officer. Mr Moeletsi is a seasoned executive with a broad base experience and knowledge and we believe he is the ideal leader to direct our efforts to make NRCS more stable, accountable, transparent, and, most importantly, fully independent global regulatory organisation.

His experience in the industry and government equips him for this very challenging job. He is an intelligent and thoughtful individual who will provide the right kind of leadership for the organisation.

Having successfully weathered preeminent challenges of establishing this organisation after the separation from the South African Bureau of Standard two years ago, NRCS is in a position where today it can meet challenges it faces with confidence.

The Board intends to do what it can working together with the CEO to strengthen the position of this organisation.

We are therefore, delighted that Mr Moeletsi has agreed to lead NRCS into the next stage of its evolution to ensure that the organisation carries out its business in the most effective, efficient and economical way while achieving overall regulatory objectives.

The regulatory and enforcement function of NRCS gives it resilience, while its openness to change and innovation enables it to overcome difficulties and to ultimately prosper.

Having, Mr Moeletsi join us as the CEO, brings with it new insights as we are embarking on the next stage of the strategic journey of the organisation. Our development requires world-class business strategy, execution and drive and increased global presence and leadership position.

All these cannot be realised without the CEO who should set the entire tone for leadership. The CEO plays a critical and strategic role in the operations and success of any organisation’s business. In the immediate term the role of the CEO requires all mandates to be aligned with the Board’s expectation.

I cannot however, over-emphasise enough that your position Mr Moeletsi comes with huge responsibilities. Your role as the CEO encompasses broader responsibilities:

Some of these include among others:

• Ensuring that the long-term strategy and vision of the organisation and its management are developed and recommended to the Board to generate satisfactory levels of positive relations with stakeholders.

• Consistently striving to achieve the organisation’s financial and operating goals and objectives, and ensure that the day-to-day business affairs of the organisation are appropriately managed.

• Ensuring that a positive and ethical work climate is maintained which is conducive to attracting, retaining and motivating employees at all levels.

• Fostering a corporate culture that promotes sustainable ethical practices, encourages individual integrity and fulfils social responsibility objectives and imperatives.

With your appointment, the foundation and team already in place, I am confident that NRCS is already well on its way to becoming the world’s leading regulatory organisation.

In closure, I’d like to extend my congratulations to you Mr Moeletsi and I look forward to working with you. You will be leading an organisation that is in the forefront of governmental activity. The position itself requires somebody with the desire to contribute to the public good and I can think of no one more prepared to take this role.

Thank you
