Legal Metrology - Type Approval

Measuring instruments for mass-, volume-, length- and area must be type approved before they may be used legally for trade purposes.
  • Instruments are examined and tested to ensure that they meet the legal, technical and accuracy requirements in terms of the relevant specifications/regulations.
  • On the successful completion of the evaluation a national Type Approval Certificate is issued, which means the instrument may be used for trade purposes.
  •  In addition a Pattern Description document for every approved instrument is issued and is available to users and the public. It covers
    • A description of the instrument and technical requirements;
    •  Restrictions on use.
