Legal Metrology - Consultation & Training
SUPPORT SERVICES

NRCS provides support and advice in the areas of:
  • Legal Metrology policies
  • Interpretation of requirements of the Trade Metrology Act and Regulations and Measuring Units and National Measuring Standards Regulations
  • Training of Legal Metrology inspectors and ad hoc training of provincial officials requiring a knowledge of the Trade Metrology Act and Regulations
  • New legislation including technical regulations and requirements
  • SADCMEL activities including drafting of regional standards and secretariat
  • OIML Recommendations
  • Issues “Certificate of Authority” to enable facilities to verify to SANS10378.
  • Assessors are provided to SANAS for the assessment of SANS10378 accredited facilities.
  • Examination and registration of verification officers.

VERIFICATION OFFICER EXAMINATIONS

No courses (training) are offered by Legal Metrology to qualify as verification officers (VO’s). Self-study and in house training by the accredited facility is required.
The syllabus for the different instrument examination papers is available from Legal Metrology. (See contact details).
The examinations consist of three parts:
Part I – The Trade Metrology Act is a closed book, multi choice answer (monkey puzzle), examination.
Part II –The question papers cover the instrument(s) that the candidate(s) wish to qualify for and are an open book examination, they may take a copy of the relevant regulations or specification(s) with them into the examination room.
Part III – The candidates have to perform a practical verification of the instrument(s) they wish to qualify for.
The pass mark for Part I and II is 60%.
Examinations for Part I and II may be written, by appointment only, on the first Friday of every month, at the NRCS, Pretoria (SABS campus) and NRCS regional offices in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Durban.
The evaluation is performed by appointment with one of the regional offices.


EXAMINATION FEES

The re-write of failed examinations on any one of the three parts will be allowed only one month later.
If the examination is failed for a second time, a re-write will only be allowed three months later, unless proof is provided that training by an expert took place.
On successful completion of all three parts of the examination, a VO. certificate is issued to the candidate.
