Food - Regulated Food and Food Products
NRCS protects the health and safety of consumers by ensuring compliance to food safety regulations (compulsory specifications) of fish and fishery products (mainly frozen fish, crustaceans and molluscs) and canned meat. Spoilage or contamination of these products poses a serious threat to human health.

Food - Regulated Food and Food Products
Food for human consumption should meet the following requirements:
Freedom from pathogens and toxins:
  • Quality and composition:
  • Packaging and labelling:
  • FAI administers food safety regulations (compulsory specifications) for
    • Canned meat and canned meat products.
    • Canned fish, marine molluscs and crustaceans         
    • Frozen fish and marine molluscs
    • Frozen rock lobster
    •  Frozen shrimps, langoustines and crabs
    •  Smoked Snoek

The minimum requirements of the compulsory specifications are based on:
  • Pre-requisites for food safety - Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Hygiene Practices  (GHP).
  • Standards and guidelines  set by Codex Alimentarius
  • National requirements
